Discipleship: Following Jesus Wholeheartedly

“Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” - Matthew 16:24

Introduction

Being a Christian is more than just believing in Jesus - it’s about becoming His disciple. A disciple is a learner, a follower, one who commits to walking in the footsteps of the Master.

What is a Disciple?

A disciple is someone who:

  • Learns from Jesus through His Word
  • Follows Jesus in obedience
  • Becomes like Jesus in character
  • Makes other disciples

The Cost of Discipleship

Jesus never hid the cost of following Him. Discipleship requires:

  1. Self-Denial - Putting God’s will above our own
  2. Cross-Bearing - Dying to our selfish desires
  3. Following - Going where He leads, when He leads

The Process of Discipleship

Discipleship is a journey, not a destination. It’s about growing in grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Stages of Spiritual Growth:

Baby Christians (1 Corinthians 3:1-2):

  • Need milk, not solid food
  • Focused on their own needs
  • Learning basic spiritual principles

Young Men (1 John 2:14):

  • Strong in the Word
  • Overcoming the evil one
  • Growing in spiritual warfare

Fathers (1 John 2:13):

  • Know Him who is from the beginning
  • Reproducing spiritual life in others
  • Mature in wisdom and understanding

The Marks of a True Disciple

Jesus gave us clear indicators of genuine discipleship:

Biblical Marks of Discipleship:

  1. Continuance in His Word (John 8:31)

    • Regular study and meditation
    • Obedience to His commands
    • Letting Scripture guide decisions
  2. Love for One Another (John 13:35)

    • Genuine care for fellow believers
    • Unity in the body of Christ
    • Preferring others above ourselves
  3. Fruitfulness (John 15:8)

    • Lives that produce spiritual fruit
    • Impact on others for the kingdom
    • Character that reflects Christ

The Great Commission

Every disciple is called to make disciples. This is not optional - it’s part of our calling.

The Four Steps of Disciple-Making:

  1. Go - Take initiative to reach others
  2. Make Disciples - Not just converts, but followers
  3. Baptize - Public identification with Christ
  4. Teach - Ongoing instruction in God’s Word

Growing as a Disciple

Discipleship requires intentional effort and discipline. Like any relationship, it grows through time spent together.

Essential Disciplines for Growth:

Daily Bible Reading:

  • Systematic study of God’s Word
  • Meditation on Scripture
  • Application to daily life

Prayer:

  • Regular communication with God
  • Listening as well as speaking
  • Intercession for others

Fellowship:

  • Regular gathering with other believers
  • Accountability relationships
  • Mutual encouragement

Service:

  • Using gifts to serve others
  • Practical expressions of love
  • Contributing to God’s kingdom

The Goal of Discipleship

The goal is not perfection but transformation - becoming more like Jesus every day.

What Mature Discipleship Looks Like:

  • Christ-like Character - Displaying the fruit of the Spirit
  • Kingdom Perspective - Seeing life from God’s viewpoint
  • Reproductive Life - Investing in others
  • Sacrificial Love - Putting others’ needs first

Conclusion

Discipleship is the adventure of a lifetime. It’s challenging but rewarding, costly but worthwhile. Jesus is looking for wholehearted followers who will take up their cross and follow Him.

The question is not whether you’re a perfect disciple, but whether you’re a committed one. Are you following Jesus wholeheartedly?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I want to be Your disciple. Help me to deny myself, take up my cross, and follow You. Transform me into Your likeness and use me to make other disciples. In Your name, Amen.
